Short Bio
Laurel Johannesson is a Canadian artist who studied at the University of Calgary, Canada (MFA), the University of Saskatchewan, Canada (BFA and BA) and the Royal College of Art in London, England. With degree specializations in Printmaking, Digital Media, Drawing and Painting and a background in Photography and Video, her work often crosses the boundaries between all of these areas. Her sensual, liquid images reference the body and temporality and are dependent on a response to time and place. In some of the imagery, a female figure (often the artist herself) is revealed and concealed ...enveloped in a watery environment that casts a liquid veil of mystery, shielding and camouflaging the face and body. There is a fragility and a vulnerability to the imagery that hints at the equation between desire and voyeurism. In 2005, Laurel was an invited Artist in Residence at the Association of Icelandic Visual Artists in Reykjavik, Iceland as well as the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts in Skopelos, Greece. In June 2006, she returned to Greece where she was Artist in Residence at the Apothiki Art Centre on the island of Paros, where her work was also exhibited in a solo exhibition in July 2007. In addition, she was an invited Fellow at the Bau Institute in Italy in 2007. In 2008 she traveled to the Côte d’Azur where she was once again Artist in Residence. In 2009 she was a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome, and in 2010 at Spiazzi in Venice where she also exhibited her work in a solo exhibition. In the summer of 2013, Laurel returned to the American Academy in Rome, as well as the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts to work on new projects. Continuing on with the Greece and Rome projects in 2014, she also had the rare opportunity to conduct some of her research at the Vatican Library. In addition to Italy, her work has been exhibited in Greece, England, France, India, Iceland, Portugal, Argentina, Germany, Japan, Chile, Taiwan, the United States, and Canada. Laurel is Associate Professor at the Alberta College of Art + Design where she has also held positions as Program Head and Assistant Dean. She serves on the Editorial Board of the Generative Art, Science, and Technology Journal (Milan, Italy), and is Co-Editor of CMDJ - Journal of Computational Media Design. She has presented her research on the subject of temporality at art and technology conferences in Rome, Florence, and Milan (Italy), the University of Greenwich, London, UK, and the University of California – Los Angeles.
