Short Bio
The artist was privately trained in a variety of traditional fine art techniques and media, including drawing, painting, metal, resin, color theory, and film. Her mother, who taught at the Rhode Island School of Design (USA) for more than 20 years, selected her teachers, all graduates or faculty at RISD. They encouraged a sound classical education, as well as experimentation beyond the boundaries of tradition. She began exhibiting her artwork professionally in 1968. She was introduced to digital art through one of her teachers, Nathaniel Jacobson, a Yale educated Color Theorist and Research Affiliate at the MIT Media Lab (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge MA). She worked as his studio assistant. Following that, in 1980 she worked in video as Art Director at the CBS network affiliate broadcast television station in Boston, Massachusetts. After forming her own firm, she worked professionally with cutting-edge art using digital technology in both video and print on commission for select international clients. By 2011 she was working exclusively as a digital and new media fine artist, embracing technology that compliments and enhances the creative process, and blurs the edge between traditional media. Most recently, Gloria King Merritt's digital art was shown in London at the Cello Factory Gallery, exhibition by The London Group, and Galatea Fine Arts on Harrison Avenue in Boston, Massachusetts (“Born Digital – The Artist as Innovator”/June 2018). She is currently exhibiting at the Fairpoint Hotel in Cambridge MA (Aug – Sep, 2018), and New London Hospital in New London NH (Sep – Dec, 2018).
