Hidden Family

Musing about family traditions and their often-unknown origins came into my mind as I walked through the gardens of Versailles. It was December and so I wasn't surprised to find that many of the sculptures were wrapped in cloth. Their transformation into mysterious figures wrapped in patched cloths bound tightly with ropes got my attention!

Back at home, I remembered the bi-fold closet doors of my suburban childhood home. “Hidden Family” became a set of these doors adorned with images from Versailles; each door a figure built from many figures. Each figure made from multiple grids of statues in decreasing sizes symbolizing the complexity of these conflicting forces, as they become part of the body.

Together they form a group of guards who watch and protect neglected boxes and piles of family junk, technologies and dreams hidden in the closet.

These harmonious and conflicting forces include: Culture/Identity, Relocation/Immigration, Education/Work, War/Peace, Race/Gender, Food/Religion, Marriage/Divorce, Race/Gender, Birth/Adoption/Abortion/Death
