Cynthia,
Look at today's posting on my www.artiststory.com blog. I appreciate your asking about my spectrogram project. It prompted me to write about it and related works and ideas.
Thanks,
Mel

Cynthia,
I have made three torah spectrograph works. The one shown above is made of acrylic painted wooden rods set in the Negev desert mountains near Yeroham where my son Ron lives with his wife and six children. The second was an interactive computer-generated spectrograph that I created at MIT that played out the museum visitor's bar/bat mitzvah portion after entering one's birth date at Yeshiva University Museum. The third (also posted on this SIGGRAPH site) is a hupa made of stained glass in Miami. All use a kabbalistic code in which each Hebrew letter has a color equivalent.

You can read more about them in my book Future of Art in a Digital Age: From Hellenistic to Hebraic Consciousness (Intellect Books/University of Chicago Press 2006, paperback edition 2008) in the sections "LightsOROT at MIT: Learning Torah Through Art" (pp. 165-166) and "Spiritual Bits and Bytes" (pp. 110-114).

Your question made me realize that I had not written anything about these three artworks on the web. I'll try find some time to write it up on my www.artiststory.com blog. I'll let you know when I do.

Shana tova,
Mel

Mel - this looks like an absolutely wonderful installation! Torah in the desert! Do you have an artist statement for this? More images of the installation? How big is it?
