I encourage members of this group to read Greg Garvey's curator's text on The Aesthetics of Gameplay.
Any additional thoughts on his text? Especially this key statement:
However, the nominators were not shy about challenging the very raison d’être of such a show, demanding a more nuanced definition of “indie” (not triple A or mass-market?), even questioning a proposed format for this online exhibition restricted to images, text and links. After all, games are interactive – a game must be played especially if the goal is to showcase that unique combination of a fundamental game mechanic coupled to the aesthetic elements. Indeed, game mechanics arguably have an aesthetic in and of themselves.
That is an amazingly thought provoking article Glennis! Thanks for sharing it.

Games AS art: The Aesthetics of Play
@ Darold Davis re Games vs. Art: Ebert vs. Barker
It seems to me that they're both dancing around the main topic, which is that games are a form of creative expression which can be classified as art, and which will continue to gain cultural acceptance and appreciation. Whether that art is good, or great, or accomplished or relevant seems to me to be more useful questions. For what it's worth, the NEA now includes games as an art form that is eligible for their grants. - http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109835-Games-Now-Legally-...

These shows have passed, but I thought they were still worth posting. Maybe SIGGRAPH could sponsor or co-locate a future event?

About the Exhibition
The Art of Video Games is one of the first exhibitions to explore the forty-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, with a focus on striking visual effects and the creative use of new technologies. The exhibition will feature some of the most influential artists and designers during five eras of game technology, from early pioneers to contemporary designers . It also will explore the many influences on game designers, and the pervasive presence video games have in the broader popular culture, with new relationships to video art, film and television, educational practices, and professional skill training. Chris Melissinos, founder of Past Pixels and collector of video games and gaming systems, is the curator of the exhibition.
